Victory. Lt AVL Hull of the 18th Battalion AIF, plants the Australian flag on a German Pillbox as Australian forces overrun Anzac Redoubt, on the Menin Road, during the famous battle of Polygon Wood (Belgium) in WW1. This dramatic incident took place at 7:15 AM on September 20th 1917. Lt Hull was killed in action three weeks later. This picture was used as a Christmas and New Year\'s Greetings card in 1917-18 - The original design has been changed three times since 1901,
- The Australian flag was usually flown in conjunction with, often in an inferior position to, the Union Flag of the UK well into the 1960s
- The adoption of the winning flag design was never debated in the Australian Parliament - it was sent to the Imperial Authorities in England to be approved.
- The Australian Natives' Association in particular felt the flag was unsuitable or insufficiently patriotic..
- The contest attracted 32,823 entries from men, women and children. .

Australian National Flag Day – anniversary of our Flag, first flown in 1901.
11 November
Remembrance Day – Flags flown at peak till 10:30 am, at half mast from 10:30am to 11:03am, then at peak the remainder of the day.
