Not sure how you feel about us becoming a Republic, and I don't care how you feel but my feelings are clear on this. I wish to remain part of the British Empire and do not wish to go it alone. Although we would still be part of the Commonwealth there would be changes that I feel would further disintegrate our Australian culture. We have always been with the British and our ties will be forever intertwined. We are allies, we are brothers in Arms, we are of convict extraction and we are Australian and like it or not our History is borne of the British.
Becoming a Republic would be the first step in what I class as the terrible triffecta. First we would become a Republic and then we would have Flag change and then with the Republic comes the Bill Of Rights. ..... so, Republic, Flag change, and Bill Of Rights!. Lovely, frigging lovely, may as well throw our whole system our Heritage and culture out the window. Not good at all. What is wrong with Tradition?. I like it and I will fight and vote, rally and protest for NO REPUBLIC, NO FLAG CHANGE AND NO BILL OF RIGHTS.
We had a referendum in Nov 1999 and the final vote for the ARM (Australian Republic Movement) was 73 for the motion and 79 voting against or abstaining from the vote. That tells you something doesn't it?
In Australia each State has its own constitutional monarchies and this means that any State not wanting to become a part of a Republic could secede from our Federation, which would leave Australia broken up. We could very well become like the Americias and have a USA, a Nth America and a Sth America, and dunno' about you but I see many problems with being a country within a country. Nope, shove the Republic, it is not for me. We haven't touched on currency and changes to all Govt. stationery and emblems. The cost would be immense and a total waste of money.
Australia could be broken up and each State have a President with each State having different rules. can you see the Islamic flag flying high over Sydney Harbour Bridge? President Manboobs Habib perhaps? Gees, sounding worse by the minute isn't it.
There is no way we could so drastically change the political landscape of this wonderful country without some detrimental effects along the way. I say leave well enough alone, and say No, No, and bloody well No mate to the terrible triffecta.
